Arcadio III: Things that could have avoided his death

  • Arcadio needed to not want to sleep with his mother. That is disgraceful and distasteful.
  • Arcadio needed to listen to Colonel Stevenson's message from his brother to not resist the attack of the Conservatives. It is from his brother Colonel Aureliano Buendía. Even though he hasn't proved himself the most tactical person, Arcadio should still listen.
  • Arcadio needed to be less stubborn. Even after Colonel Stevenson gave away confidential information, he was still not released.
  • Arcadio needed to know when he's lost the war and not persist. "The barricades had been broken and the defenders were openly fighting in the streets, first until they used up their ration of rifle bullet, then with pistols against rifles, and finally hand to hand."
  • Arcadio needed to not overgo the borderline of his power. He spent public funds on a house and Viennese furniture.
  • Arcadio needed to marry Santa Sofía de la Piedad. She is the bearer of his children and he isn't married to her, which was bad business.
  • Arcadio needed to stop killing people. He killed a man for not agreeing with him, which is of pretty low moral standard.
  • Arcadio needed to give his position to someone capable of making important decisions, like Úrsula. He has done nothing good since he become military and civil leader.
  • Arcadio needed to act like a father. He has done nothing but ruin Macondo, let alone take care of his children.
  • Arcadio needed to at least supply his troops with enough training and goods to fight. He lost every single one of his troops.

Character Analysis 1:
José Arcadio Buendía, the first José Arcadio, was a very solitary character. Eventually, all he spoke in was Latin, and only one person, the priest, could undestand him. "Thus it was discovered that José Arcadio Buendía's devilish jargon was Latin. Father Nicanor took advantage of the circumstance of his being the only person who had been able to communicate with him to try to inject the faith into his twisted mind." In this section, after the priest figures out that he is speaking Latin, he suggests ways of faith, but José Arcadio rejected these ideas. He was tied to a tree because he's crazy, which he says he is in Latin. Instead of attending a celebration, he was simply brought cake, while tied to the tree. Though he did have visitors from time to time, they did not understand him and, in fact, were boggled by him.

Character Analysis 2:
José Arcadio Segundo (José Arcadio IV) was another solitary character. He grew up quite close to his twin brother, Aureliano Segundo, but as José Arcadio became more interested in cockfights, and as Aureliano became rich, they began to split. He was the original lover of Petra Cotes, but Aureliano ended up becoming more active with her. After José lost Petra Cotes and Aureliano Segundo, he really didn't have anyone for him. José Arcadio showed his seclusion by buying prostitutes. He escaped a giant massacre, where more than 3,000 were killed. He tried to tell people of these events and they didn't believe him, so he stayed locked in Melquiades's workroom for a long time, reading parchments.

Character Analysis 3:
José Arcadio V led a pretty lonely childhood. "...José Arcadio was still and autumnal child, terribly sad and solitary." He was send to Rome for a year, to become a pope, and came back and all of that changed. The children would come over and shave him, massage him, dry him, powder him, and even dress him. In return he would just bless them. José Arcadio came upon three canvas sacks with seven thousand two hundred fourteen pieces of gold. With this discovery, he 'jazzified' the house. He began to, like the other Arcadios, throw parties.
